How We Work…

Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the personalites of both the therapist and the client, on the particular problems that the client brings, and on the training of the therapist(s). It requires an active effort on your part in order to benefit. To be most successful, you will need to work both during our sessions and between them. Since psychotherapy is a joint venture, ongoing feedback from you about your experience of the process will also increase its effectiveness.

Psychotherapy has both benefits and risks. Risks sometimes include experiencing uncomfortable levels of feelings like sadness, guilt, anxiety, fear, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. It may require recalling unpleasant aspects of your history. Psychotherapy has also been shown to have benefits — it often leads to a significant reduction in feelings of distress, better relationships, and resolution of specific problems.

Appointments:  These are times reserved specifically for you. In return, we expect you to notify us at your earliest opportunity if you are unable to keep an appointment. This allows us to make the time available to others who need it. If you do not notify us (directly or by leaving a message) at least 24 hours in advance, you will be charged a fee for the time reserved: full fee for missed appointments; half fee for late cancellations. (Exceptions to the above may be made in unusual circumstances.)

Office Hours:
Tuesday – Thursday: 10 am to 9 pm
Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm

To Reach Us By Phone:  Please call 303-674-8448. If you get our answering machine, we will make every effort to return your call as soon as possible during office hours. If you are difficult to reach, please leave times and alternatives for how we can most effectively reach you. We understand that answering machines can seem impersonal. However, we have found  answering services to have their own drawbacks.

If your call is urgent, please say so in your message and follow the prompt to press “1." We check our answering machine regularly but are not generally available between 9 pm and 10 am. Therefore, in the case of an emergency, you may also want to contact your family physician, the emergency room at the nearest hospital or urgent care center, or 911.

Sessions: These may vary in length and frequency depending on needs and circumstances. In addition, your final session will be free. Closure is a very important aspect of counseling and psychotherapy that is often overlooked. Acknowledging an ending often makes energy more available for moving on. This wrap-up session also allows us all to assess the effectiveness of our work together — one of the ways we continually improve the quality of care we provide. (This free final session applies only following an ongoing series of  sessions and not to single consultations or follow-up sessions. It is a session devoted to closure and evaluation and is not for addressing new issues.)

Fees are due at the time of service. Payment can be made with cash, check, Discover/Novus, VISA, or MasterCard. And, if necessary, a payment plan can be designed to meet your needs. Payments may be deductible Medical Expenses on your income tax return. Your cancelled checks or credit card receipts are sufficient records for this purpose and statements are provided upon request.
